Above and Beyond:
The Life of a Female Footballer
Ffion Price on her attempts to balance work and life during a league title push

The Cardiff City women are on the verge of their first league title in 10 years, following a 1-1 tie with Swansea, that gives them a 5 point advantage at the top of the table.
They seek to break up the monopoly on the division, held by the Swans and Cardiff Met for the past decade.
Ffion Price, the enigmatic full back for the Bluebirds, known for her love of crocs and her need for coffee, is one of the starters looking for glory at the end of the season.
However, as important as this football season is, it’s not the absolute focus of Ffion’s day.
Like many of the players in the Adran Premier, Ffion has a full time job that coincides with her playing time.
Along with football training three days a week, Ffion is a full time primary school teacher, which leads to a lot of long days.
“A normal school day for me starts at 5, arrive to school for 6.20am and finish at 4.00pm.”
“I then head straight to football for a coffee and marking, train for 2 hours and then head home to finish off the day.”
Ffion also has match days on Sundays, along with her own independent training to improve her fitness for games.
You wonder, with this hectic of a schedule, does Ffion manage to find any time to have social life amongst all this responsibility.
“It’s sometimes difficult to find the balance and I do prioritise work and football and therefore, miss out on social aspects.”
She does admit that in the beginning she found it difficult to manage her lifestyle, leading to fatigue and being tired all of the time.
But as her career progresses she believes she’s gotten herself into a good routine.
“I’m starting to find the balance and managing to play football, teach and socialise.”
“It's important to find what works for you, and stick at it!”
Perhaps it’s due to the season’s success so far, but Ffion claims it’s easy to keep the motivation up, citing the teams spirit.
“We have a great bond at the football club, we're all good friends which helps!”
Perhaps it’s due to the season’s success so far, but Ffion claims it’s easy to keep the motivation up, citing the teams spirit.
“We have a great bond at the football club, we're all good friends which helps!”
And of course, “Regular coffee trips help.”
Ffion is optimistic about the direction of women's football in Wales, seeing the potential of it eventually becoming a full time job for her.
“It’s most certainly growing!”
“Our recent Cardiff game at the stadium showcased that!”
“It was amazing to see so many fans of all ages and genders come to the game to show their support”.
However, she does understand the difficulties they face as “it requires a lot of money and support to make it happen”.
“I think there is still work to do to support up and coming teams within grassroots but we are starting to build on something exciting.”
Despite the league title being within their grasp, Ffion, as all good professionals do, was quick to play down expectations.
“We like to take each game at a time, we don’t want to get ahead of ourselves.”
“It’s most certainly a target for us and we will be aiming for that throughout the season.”
“Anything can happen in this league so it’s important to focus on one game at a time.”
“It would be an incredible achievement for the club and myself personally.”
“It’s a target we are hoping to achieve.”
While the answers are what you would expect from the modern athlete, well trained in PR, you have to imagine the excitement is building behind closed doors.
What would have started as a dream is now turning into an expectation and would be the culmination of years of hard work and dedication to the cause.
The chance to realise a dream for many a Bluebird over the years, and bring home a title.
